Auditions announced to kick-off 2019-2020 Duluth Playhouse season

A jazzy musical revue that harkens back to the 1950s and a tantalizing technicolor adventure down the yellow brick road to Oz will kick off the upcoming 2019-2020 season at the NorShor Theatre, presented by The Duluth Playhouse, but first, we’ll be hosting auditions for each show

Details are listed below for each upcoming audition. Break a leg!

 



 

SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE

  • AUDITIONS: Saturday, May 11 from 10am-2pm
  • CALLBACKS: Saturday, May 11 between 3-6pm
  • SEEKING: Seeking a diverse cast of singers and dancers (18+). Performers of all races, genders, and ethnicities are encouraged to audition. All actors will receive some pay. Union and non-union welcome.
  • DIRECTOR: Michael Matthew Ferrell
  • PREPARE: 
    • 16-32 bars of a song in the same style as the show.
    • Bring a picture, resume, and a filled out audition form (attached to the audition packet).
    • Be in dance clothes and shoes for callbacks.
  • SIGN-UP: 
    • Sign up for a 5-minute audition slot online when the SignUp becomes available on Saturday, April 27.
    • If you do not know when you can come, feel free to attend without signing up – you will be seen between slots.
    • If you cannot make auditions, video auditions are also acceptable. Submit a song and include a headshot and resume. Forward to seitz@duluthplayhouse.org.
  • REHEARSALS: 
    • Tentative start date of August 13, 2019.
    • Rehearsals will be Tuesday-Friday, 6pm-10pm, and Saturdays between 10-4pm.
    • If actors are available during the weekday, some rehearsals may take place outside this schedule.
    • Saturday and Sunday, September 14 and 15, will be Tech/Dress Rehearsals (Monday, Sept. 16 day off).
  • PERFORMANCES: 
    • September 19-22, September 26-29, and October 3-6 (Thursday-Saturday @ 7:30pm, and Sundays @ 2pm)
    • Additional performances may be added Wednesday, September 25 and/or Sunday matinees at2pm.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
This refreshing, sizzling-hot production of a show, will bring sensational rock and roll songs to a new generation.

The Grammy Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated Smokey Joe’s Cafe made history as Broadway’s longest running musical revue and celebrates the best songs of the legendary songwriting duo, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Their generation-defining songs climbed the Billboard charts and provided hit after hit for icons like Elvis Presley, Ben E. King, The Coasters, and The Drifters.

With themes of love won, lost and imagined, their songs touched global audiences with wit and emotion. Audiences will be treated to more than 30 show-stopping tunes including classics like “On Broadway,” “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog,” “Love Potion #9,” “Spanish Harlem,” and “Stand by Me.”

 



 

THE WIZARD OF OZ

  • AUDITIONS: Saturday, May 18 from Noon-6:00pm
  • CALLBACKS: Sunday, May 19, between 10am-5pm
  • SEEKING: This is an adult company. At this time, we are not seeing anyone under the age of 18. Performers of all races, genders, and ethnicities are encouraged to audition. All actors will receive some pay. Union and Non-union welcome.
  • DIRECTOR: Joe Chvala
  • PREPARE: 
    • Bring a picture and resume and fill out the attached audition form.
    • Prepare 16-32 bars of a song in the same style as the show.
    • Be in dance clothes and shoes for callbacks
  • SCHEDULING AN AUDITION TIME: 
    • Sign up for a 5-minute audition slot online when the SignUp becomes available on Saturday, April 27.
    • If you do not know when you can come, feel free to attend without signing up – you will be seen between slots.

    • If actors are available during the weekday, some rehearsals may take place outside this schedule.
  • PERFORMANCES: 
    • December 5-8, 12-15, and 19-22. (Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30pm & Saturday/Sundays at 2:00pm)
    • An additional performance may be added Wednesday, December 18, should the show sell out.

ABOUT THE SHOW:

Based on the beloved 1939 film that has been entertaining families for generations, the Wizard of Oz is re-imagined for the stage, full of the familiar songs from the Oscar-winning movie score.

When Dorothy’s farmhouse is blown over the rainbow to the magical land of Oz, a magical adventure ensues with ruby slippers, Toto, lions, tigers, and bears oh my! Follow us down the yellow brick road with your favorite characters and iconic moments, plus a few surprises along the way.
